How To Design And Build Your Own House

Analysing a space maximises its potential. An interior designer will often present you with a drawn plan (bird’s eye view) of your room, and elevations (drawings showing the view of each wall as seen directly from the opposite side). The designer would obtain the measurements of the room by carrying out a site survey. A common scale used is 1:20, ie, every 20mm in the room is reduced to 1mm on paper (200mm=1cm).

How to Carry out a Site Survey

Draw the four walls of the room. You should have four rectangles on your page. These are called elevations. Now draw another shape to represent a bird’s eye view (plan view) of the floor space. Measure the overall length, width and height of the room and record these on your drawings. Note any special features and draw these onto your site plan and elevations. For example: radiators, windows, chimney breasts, fireplaces, wall mounted televisions.
