Merry Renk grew up on a twenty-five acre farm in Trenton, New Jersey, during the 1920s and '30s. Her fascination with royal crowns began while reading fairy tales and admiring illustrations of queens or princesses wearing beautiful ones.
As Renk and her sister played in the surrounding woods she imagined that they were traipsing through a royal kingdom. So,she made crowns from leaves, flowers, and sticks for both of them to wear.
During museum visits, with her parents, Renk became drawn to the archeological exhibits of ancient crowns. She was amazed that the pure gold designs and precious gems had remained intact, after having been buried underground or sealed in tombs for centuries. She also wondered about what kind of steps were taken in creating such crowns, figuring that they were incredible tasks.
